Andrew Jackson was a slave-owner, and he opposed any policy that would outlaw slavery in the western territories. When anti-slavery tracts were sent to the South during his presidency, he forbid their delivery, and referred to the abolitionists as monsters who should “atone for this wicked attempt with their lives.”
