why did billy bot want to kill the ghost coon?

Billy actually wanted to prove the "ghost coon" didn't exist and win his bet with Rubin. After they had the coon cornered, Billy didn't have the heart to kill him.

I told him there were plenty more; why kill him? He had lived here a long time, and more than one hunter had listened to the voices of his hounds bawling on his
trail.
