Will Shepard is six-years-old when his mother leaves his family, and his father takes his own life. He is too young to understand the complicated relationship between his parents and blames himself for his father's death. Soon after, he is shipped off to England, where he feels like an outsider. His only solace is football (soccer), and he puts all his effort into his football career.

Will always believed he had two personalities, the good Will and the bad. As Will becomes older, the bad Will appears more and more. He rapes a woman who accuses him of being incapable of satisfying her sexual needs, and then he murders aother woman on the night he loses the World Cup. He accepts his fate, knowing that he will be caught and go to prison, but he is saved when his brother arrives and covers up the crime. Will, however, doesn't learn from his mistakes, and he continues to act out violent fantasies, hurting women for the smallest infractions.

In the end, Will believes that only Maggie can save him. In hearing her songs, he hears a truth that leads him to believe Maggie will be able to see the real him and heal the things that are broken inside. When Maggie doesn't come through, he continues to act out his fantasies, and even begins having fantasies about hurting Maggie and her children. In the novel's conclusion, we learn that Will faked his death, and when Will learns that Maggie walked away from the murder charges, he decides to kill her and her children as punishment.
