Philip Bradford joined the army to become a soldier, but he was assigned to be a math instructor at West Point instead. The disappoint leaves Philip an angry man with no outlet for his anger. He physically abuses his wife early in their marriage, and as he continues drinking, the beatings become worse. Eventually Philip decides that he needs to kill both his wife and child. His wife, Maggie, then hides with their three-year-old daughter. When Phillip finds them, Maggie is forced to kill him in self defense. The death is resolved and settled in West Point shortly after it occurs, only to be brought up years later when Maggie is accused of shooting her husband. When this happens, the press digs up information on Philip's murder and publicly accuse Maggie of being a black widow.
