She was born a twin, but her sister died as a toddler, and the parents bestowed all of their love, attention and wealth upon her. Minnie is not spoiled, but naïve, and makes an unfortunate choice in husbands. Long courted by the troubled but wealthy Henry Gowan, she finally agrees to marry him and they move to Italy. She has a child there, and her parents come to be with her.
