Maybeth is the Tillerman's child. She struggles in school, and her teacher believes that she is mentally incapable of learning. Dicey refuses her diagnosis, insisting that Maybeth is merely shy. In the end, Maybeth proves her teacher wrong and learns to read with the use of phonics.
