Henry Ford II took over his grandfather's company in 1945, after he returned from serving in the Navy. He immediately hired a group of ten Air Force officers, who'd run the Air Force Office of Statistical Control and were specialists in cost efficiency. Over time, they became known as the Whiz Kids.

Ford named Iacocca the head of the Ford Division in December 1960. In 1968, he hired Bunkie Knudsen from General Motors as President of the Ford Motor Company, a position that Iacocca has hoped for. Henry told Lee to have patience, and on December 10, 1970, he appointed Iacocca president of Ford Motor Company. Iacocca describes Henry II as insecure.
