Who is Erich Fromm from Kafka Was the Rage: A Greenwich Village Memoir and what is their importance?

Erich Fromm is a famous, German psychoanalyst. He came to America during WWII and was one of Anatole's professors at the New School. Fromm was of the opinion that most Americans led pointless lives.
