Diane is Marie's mother. Her leaving as she did ripped their family apart. It made her Marie's father push harder for Marie to get better grades and do better than others in school. For Marie, it made her distrustful of friendships. She misses her mother terribly and on the rare occasions when her mother sends postcards or other correspondence, it just makes things worse emotionally for Marie.
