Who is Ammi Ruhama from Caleb's Crossing: A Novel and what is their importance?

Ammi Ruhama does not appear in the narrative, but is referred to several times by Bethia. His name is a combination of Biblical names that translate "my people" and "beloved". He has no interest in education, but he does become an exceptional boat builder.
