Who is Alice Walker from Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self and what is their importance?

Alice Walker is Rebecca's mother. When Rebecca was a little girl, her mother was largely absent from her life due to extensive traveling. She mothered in short spurts, seemingly preferring to leave her daughter in the care of others.
