Who is A. Alvarez from The Silent Woman: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes and what is their importance?

A. Alvarez was one of Sylvia and Ted's friends during the years of their marriage. He wrote a memoir about his relationship with the couple, in which, he thoroughly criticized the biography, Bitter Fame, as inaccurate and engineered by Ted and Olwyn Hughes.
