In the society in The Giver each person has to conform to their role. 9 year olds conform to the dress, actions and such of 9 year olds. After the Cermony of Twelve they are assigned a job they will do for the rest of their lives. They then learn how to perform this role. Each role is important, must be performed in order for the society to keep operating as it does from generation to generation.
