what makes Holden's essay crap? in the novel 'the catcher in the rye''

Holden has already shared with the teacher that he barely opened the History book the entire year, and only briefly looked over things before a test. So, he knew that the essay that he wrote was 'crap' because all of his other work had been woefully inadequate. What makes Holden angry, though, is the fact that the teacher reads it out loud to the class.
