The purpose of an introduction on an essay or book report, research paper, is to introduce your reader to the overall topic that the paper will be addressing. Generally speaking, the writer will want to open up with some sort of attention getting device, followed by a short summation of the need for the information/or what the paper will be about (thesis statement).
