The entire poem has a sarcastic 'bent' to it, suggesting and challenging the notion that colonialism 'saved' the savages' souls. Her feelings are those of defiance and a feeling of self worth regardless of the labels that are suggested. Her people felt neither lost, nor savage, nor without refinement, redemption or grace.
