Virgil is prepared for dealing with the injustice and bigotry that he faces in Mississippi in many ways. First, he's come from the north where a black man has had more opportunities to rise in status than in the south. He's experienced what life can be like without prejudice and so when the southerners he encounters attempt to be bigoted he is able to stand up to them and withstand their attempts at prejudice. Secondly, he is a well experience investigator, used to dealing with the rigors of the job.
