Ulysses describes the events of a single day in Dublin. How might living abroad have influence James Joyce to choose this topic?

Living outside of one's own country tends to make the ex-pat reflective as they compare one country to another. In many ways, James Joyce found his own country to be lacking, and in other ways he was able to gain a perspective and new appreciation for it that he would otherwise never have gained had he remained in his own country.
