When Suzuki came to America, he was sent to San Francisco to head up the Soto Zen Center. While in America, he was instrumental in establishing other locations, including the Zen Monastery at Tassajara and the Zen sitting center in Los Altos. Yet he lived in San Francisco at the Zen Center and this was the heart of his community.
