America is significant because Suzuki had hoped to export Zen to the West from the time he was a young man. He came to America in the 1959 to lead the Soto Zen congregation in San Francisco. He stayed because he saw in the American mindset an openness to Zen. He established the Zen Center in San Francisco as well as the first Zen Monastery in America, the Zen Mountain Center at Tassajara Springs.
