Important themes in the novel include love and passion (Catherine and Heathcliff), revenge (Hindley's desire to degrade Heathcliff), violence and cruelty (Heathcliff's treatment of Isabella, which is also an example of revenge), nature (the physical landscape and its connection to the people who live there), and the supernatural (Catherine's haunting).
