Near the end of the book, when Paulsen is competing in the Iditarod race in Alaska, he hallucinates about an American Eskimo, who leads him to safety. Another hallucination involed a man talking to him about grants for education, and yet another, hallucination was about a man who was hallucinating. Paulsen notes that all of the hallucinations were lifelike.
