When she looks at her classmates, Lia can't understand how they get up every day, eat, and go to classes. Lia views going to school in the same way she views going to the cafeteria. Teachers inject them with information. Parents divide the day into "healthy ingredients" like sports, community service, art. While at school, teachers control your day and grade you on your performance. Her metaphor for school is directly related to food because it is through food that she exercises her own control. Lia hates school for the same reasons she hates eating: school and food take away the fierce control she has over every single aspect of her life.
