Rural Living is a theme in the book. Lucas Davenport was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has always lived in the area known as "The Cities." Davenport has spent time in other places, mostly for work, but they have always been metropolitan. Rural living is a bit of a shock for a city boy, particularly when it comes to relating to other people. In a city, one can be virtually anonymous. Although Davenport is a well known figure in Minneapolis, he is afforded privacy when necessary. In a rural town, it is almost impossible to be removed from the activities in the town.
