Who is Lews Therin from Winter's Heart and what is their importance?

Lews Therin is a voice inside Rand's head. He continually warns Rand of danger and comments on different situations over the course of the novel. Lews may have been a living man at one time, or he may simply be one of Rand's former lifetime personalities.
