Actually, it was when Pete's little brother has followed him all the way to Memphis and he's having to put him back on a bus to go home that the people 'assist'. Instead of arresting him or charging him for the trouble he's caused, the fond farewell between Pete and his brother touches them to the point where they offer the little brother some gum, bus fare, and some good advice.
