In typical tradition of good versus evil, Wilbur Smith uses his characters to represent the ongoing battle in life between what is right and what is wrong. On one side is a Cabinet Minister who wants to rule the country by any means he can. He assembles wealth and power by poaching and aligning himself with Russian government, attacking any opposition and removing them by either killing them or putting them in jail.
