John MacAndrews is a wealthy doctor from Scotland. Over time, he falls in love with Beatrice, and she eventually concedes that she feels something for him as well. Her decision to marry John, however, is based on the fact that she is already pregnant with her second child by Harry. John seems to not realize that Beatrice is not a virgin as they make love for the first time, but he is not fooled by the child—supposedly several weeks premature. Through it all, he comes to realize that Beatrice and Harry are more than siblings, and that both Julia and Richard are a result of that relationship. When he realizes that the people of Wideacre are coming for Beatrice, he does exactly what Beatrice knew he would do..... and he takes Celia and the children away from the danger.
