Why does MLK state that they could thank the segregationists for the revolution that started in Birmingham?

MLK states that they could actually thank the segregationists for the revolution because they helped arouse and ignite the wrath of the Negro and that it was the Negroes as a whole that helped the revolution evolve and succeed.
