J is one of the authors of the Pentateuch. He is distinguished from the others primarily by the use Yahweh as the name of God. From a German translation of the Hebrew, the mispronunciation "Jehovah" resulted in the letter designation for this author. Since J could have been a judge, and since women were allowed to be judges, this author might have been female.
