There is a sense of authenticity to the narrative. The novel is written in clear English with slang and foreign phrases scattered liberally throughout. Due to the fact that the setting and the author both are English, there are many references to English slang, such as using the word fag for cigarette, that lend authenticity to the setting as well as the dialogue throughout the novel.
