Bell Hooks employs a professorial style in writing her book, "Where We stand: Class Matters." Her writing style is informative and instructional, as she defines and then reemphasizes the points that she is trying to drive home. Although she, like many people raised in the poor black south, describes the shame and humiliation she and her family experienced and the reality of a life of "doing without," Hooks shows no overt signs of bitterness or regret. As a teacher, she uses her personal struggles to convey to her readers the impact of classism on all people and how it intersects with sexism and racism.
