Importance of coffin

The stained-glass coffin that is hidden in a corner of the Bonner farm represents how the members of the town entrap one another with their regular malicious gossiping. Meaningfully, the coffin shatters in the climactic scene of the novel, as Sam, Miel, and the Bonner sisters all speak truthfully to one another, without the threat of gossiping.
