The novel is written in such a way that the reader believes the main narrator is the writer. The main narrator is a boy who begins at the age of seven and grows to the age of thirteen as the novel progresses. The language remains true to this narrator, never using words that a reader cannot reasonably believe a child of that age could know and understand. For this reason the language of this novel is true to both the characters and the intended audience.
