What do children in Faerie have that adults do not? Why?

In The Faerie Path, children have faery wings and can fly. When children decide to adopt adult ways, then the wings shrivel up and fall off. Tania hates that this happens. In fact, at some point when she's at the hospital, her wings come back out.
