The Nigerian singer Ọla becomes a symbol of Sandayọ's legitimacy after she sings a song about him on television. Ọla is very famous, and when she refers to Sandayọ as "a man imprisoned for trying to do good in...Nigeria" (263), Sandayọ's plight receives global attention. After the televised performance, the narrator explains, Sandayọ became "an overnight sensation" (274), and there were marches all over the world demanding his release from prison. As Ọla clearly believed Sandayọ was persecuted only for trying to do good in the schools, the rest of the world was willing to believe this also.
