The author uses language in the novel as a means of contextualizing and developing the setting and the characters. Several of the characters slip in and out of Nigerian dialects, like Yoruba and Igbo, or use pidgin English. This is not because they are ignorant necessarily, though pidgin English does not observe traditional grammatical rules, it speaks more to these characters' social standing – middle to lower class and not formally educated. In the case of those speaking in dialect, this is likely a nod to the characters' distaste for the language of their former colonizers.
