The book is divided into three parts and 69 chapters, plus an epilogue. These three parts correspond roughly to the standard three acts of a traditional plot structure. The first act contains the exposition and the inciting incident. The exposition is the introduction of the characters and their backgrounds. The reader learns that Chike and Yęmi are Nigerian military men deserting their posts because of atrocities committed by their superior, Fineboy is a guerilla rebel with dreams of being a radio star, Oma has fled an abusive marriage, and Isoken has been separated from her parents and assaulted by a group of men. Chief Ręmi Sandayọ, meanwhile, is worried he is about to lose his position as Education Minister. There are two inciting incidents here, Chike and the others coming together, and Sandayọ deciding to return to Lagos (with the $10 million he has stolen).
