In the final section of the novel, "Self," Dolma and Samphel return to the border of Tibet in order to scatter Lhamo's ashes. They must, however, remain in Nepal because the Tibetan border is still guarded by Chinese soldiers. However, looking down upon the Tibetan land grants Dolma a sense of home, belonging, and revelation that she has not experienced before.
