Jacob is so tired of the diet the workers at the assisted-living center feed him that he fantasizes about eating apples and corn on the cob. Jacob so craves real food that he imagines that he would prefer corn on the cob over making love to a woman. Thses foods are a metaphor of Jacob's youth.
