Who is Mr. Penniman from Washington Square and what is their importance?

Reverend Penniman is Mrs. Penniman's husband. Mrs. Penniman encourages Morris to pursue Catherine based upon the story of a young couple her husband had married. The couple, like Morris and Catherine, were up against a father who refused to consent to their marriage. After the ceremony, the young girl's father embraced the marriage and forgave them for running away.
