Titch’s sudden departure symbolizes despair and disillusionment. After James refuses to help Wash, Titch becomes further disillusioned with his family and with humanity. Thus, in a frenzy of despair, Titch departs into the wilderness. Wash is dismayed by Titch’s departure, although Wash and Titch seem to reconcile—at least in part—years later.
