Kilorn represents the past and a life that Mare can no longer have. As Mare’s best friend, Kilorn is the reason that Mare got involved in the revolution in the first place. However, the author makes it clear that Mare rejected Kilorn’s love. She wonders what life would have been like if she had been able to love him the way she does Cal. However, both Mare and Kilorn know they can never go back to the life they had before the revolution, as Mare can never love Kilorn and Kilorn has moved on. Nevertheless, the survival of their friendship shows strong relationships can survive no matter how life changes.
