The Crown is a symbol of the dangerous of being unchangeable. For the Silvers, the crown symbolizes their rule over Reds and is proof that they should be in control. For Reds, the Crown is a symbol of oppression and abuse. Characters like Mare and Davidson believe that only by removing the Crown can Norta become an equal, free republic like Montfort. Cal, however, believes holding on to the Crown is the only way to rebuild the country in unity. Ultimately, Norta does not progress towards Cal and Mare’s goals of freedom until the Crown is removed.
