This poem is not unlike Oh Captain! My Captain! in that it expresses a deep and profound sense of loss over the death of Abraham Lincoln. The title and reference to Lilacs is that these are flowers that bloom in the spring (usually in April...which is the month Lincoln was killed). It is a reference to death and rebirth and renewal.
