Bravery is an important motif to this novel. In this novel, Jo helps Benjamin and Madame Horcada hide and provide for a dozen Jewish children in need of help. Jo knows that if he is caught, if any of them are caught, they will be shot on sight. This danger becomes even more intense when a regiment of German soldiers come to live in the village so that they might patrol the border with Spain easily.
