Who is Mari from Veronika Decides to Die and what is their importance?

Mari is one of the three secondary characters, who is transformed by their encounter with Veronika. Her depression is directly linked to being trapped in an unfulfilling career, a depression that manifests itself in severe panic attacks. Mari sees Villete as a place of external, physical safety. As the result of encountering, and being inspired by, Veronika, Mari breaks out her self-imposed prisons and moves toward a life of true freedom and integrity.
