The overall style of the book is edgy and graphic in nature. The characters are raw and real. In general, the language used in the story is casual. There is some use of slang in the dialogue but very little. Most of the references to the time period are seen in the most basic way such as the heightened use of technology, the mention of the Heartland War, and Unwinding.
A good example of the increased use of technology is clearly seen when Connor is surprised to see such an antiquated item like a newspaper. The point of view used in Unwind by Neal Shusterman is third person omniscient. This is particularly appropriate when setting and intangible objects are of great importance to the story. Third person allows Shusterman to give the reader great insight into the sights and sounds encountered in the by each person and to develop a sense of personality and vision regarding each character.
