This is included in the story because it poses the entire question/debate as to if the human soul is a tangible or intangible thing. If it is intangible, then it can't be bought or sold. If it is tangible, then it can be harvested. Because of what eventually happens toward the end of the book, the author is saying that the soul is very real.
