What is the importance of "the woods" in the novel, Heartless?

The girls are in the woods when someone sets the woods on fire. While they are in the woods, they all believe they see Ali, even though she is supposed to be dead. While in the woods, Aria finds Ian's class ring, which leads her to believe that Ian might actually be involved in Ali's murder.
